I'm glad to see there were very few cases of confirmed heartworms reported in my area. Still, I always make sure my dog is protected during the warmer six months. Do you keep your dogs on heartworm protection all year or just during the "warmer" months? Ace takes HeartGard from May through October.
ReplyDeleteWith the weather as crazy as it has been we do year-round prevention. Unfortunately, we've been using Interceptor, so gotta see what happens with that.
DeleteAlso since suddenly we found two ticks in the fall and the one we got tested was positive for Lyme we now have to figure out what we're going to do about that also.
I love all that white up near my area! Our vet doesn't actually recommend using a preventative unless we travel, but we do quarterly testing to make sure we stay safe. It cost us about the same, but since Felix is so med-sensitive, we get to avoid ovrwhelming his system.

ReplyDeleteHaving once adopted a heartworm positive Chessie, no not Hawk, I find this a scary disease. Especially scary since the southeastern US is a high risk area. I use heartworm and flea prevention year round.

It IS scary. And the treatment isn't all that much better than the disease. This is one of the things where an ounce of prevention really is worth of ton of a treatment.
