Veterinary Highlights: Canine Disease Forecast 2016

Even though 2016 is half-way over, taking a look at what is being expected to happen is always useful.

Given the unusual weather patterns this year, heartworm disease is expected to be on a rise.

I can tell you that where we live, we recently had a fourth generation of mosquitoes pop up when we weren't expecting it any more. Around here, three generations of mosquitoes are the norm. By the end of August they are gone. But this time we have a fourth generation to contend with. More mosquitoes, the more chance of heartworm infection.

We've been always using our heartworm preventive year-round; if we weren't, I'd definitely start now.

Tick-borne diseases are expected to be on a rise in regions where ticks are common, as well as they have spread to other regions.

The report also includes canine influenza but no prediction can be made for that.
