Purina, Milo's Kitchen recalling some dog treats

Two makers of pet treats are pulling products from the market because they may contain traces of poultry antibiotics that aren't approved in the U.S.

Waggin' Train and Milo's Kitchen are mentioned often in consumer complaints made to the FDA, and Canyon Creek is also named in a few complaints. Purina said on Wednesday that there is no indication the recall is linked to the problems the FDA is investigating.

Radioactive dog bowls?

Petco has determined that one of its foreign suppliers used stainless steel mistakenly containing small quantities of Cobalt-60 when fabricating certain orders of certain SKUs/models of stainless steel pet food bowls. Cobalt-60 is a radioactive material commonly used in industrial gauging equipment and other uses.

Sweet Potato Treats from China Causing Kidney Failure?

While the chicken jerky treats problem remains unresolved, it seems that more treats are following the suit.

On the Veterinary Information Network, several veterinarians have reported cases where dogs have developed symptoms of kidney failure (Fanconi’s syndrome) similar to dogs who have been poisoned by Chinese-made chicken jerky treats.So far, the brands implicated are also made in China.

Foreign Tablet Risk with Clomicalm

Novartis Animal Health cautioned veterinarians yesterday that foreign tablets may be found in certain bottles of Clomicalm (clomipramine hydrochloride) tablets.

Novartis recommended clinic staff open each bottle of Clomicalm and examine its contents for tablets that are broken or are incorrect in color, shape or size.

Novartis Suspends Production of Interceptor, Sentinel, Program, Clomicalm and Deramaxx

On January 5th, Novartis sent a letter to veterinarians informing them that it was suspending production and shipments of the following Novartis Animal Health (NAH) brands including Interceptor Flavor Tabs, Sentinel Flavor Tabs, Clomicalm, Program Tablets and Suspension, and Milbemite. The letter also noted that production of Deramaxx which was just recently moved to the Lincoln plant will also be affected although the company will continue to ship that product from existing inventory.

Cryofreeze™ Gel Pack Recall

In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), California Innovations has announced a voluntary recall of the Cryofreeze™ gel pack that was included with the High Performance Expandable Lunch Box that was sold at Costco between May and November of 2007.

The gel packs were distributed with incorrect labeling stating that their contents are non-toxic. A health hazard could occur if the gel packs are damaged, allowing the interior gel to leak out and be ingested/swallowed by children/adults or pets. Diethylene glycol and trace amounts of ethylene glycol have now been detected in the gel.

Beware of Chicken Jerky Treats from China

In case you didn't catch onto this one yet, do stay away from this stuff. Dogs are getting sick. If you really want to indulge your dog with jerky treats, make your own, like we do.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again cautioning consumers that chicken jerky products for dogs (also sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with illness in dogs.

Canine Flu Problems in Texas

Canine influenza continues to be a problem in some areas of Texas, most notably the Austin area. A recent news report indicates 30 confirmed cases and 70 suspected H3N8 canine influenza cases since September.

A new study at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) is investigating the impact of intra-arterial injection of stem cells on chronic kidney disease in cats and protein-losing nephropathy in dogs. 

The stem cells  will be harvested from adipose tissue. The canine study will look at protein-losing nephropathy (glomerulonephritis).

Leptospirosis Outbreak Around Detroit

Over the past three weeks, more than 20 cases of leptospirosis have been reported in Detroit-area dogs. Carole Bolin, DVM, PhD, professor and director of DCPAH, and her team identified the particular strain as Icterohaemorrhiage, which can cause severe disease in humans and animals.

Veterinarians at the University of Florida report they can surgically extract heartworms from dogs suffering from severe parasitic infections.

Animal shelter outbreaks

Infectious diseases are continuous challenges for animal shelters. Unfortunately, outbreaks are not uncommon.

The Oakville and Milton Humane Society (in Ontario) is closed because of a ringworm outbreak that's been going on since early September. 

72 kittens were euthanized in the Miami-Dade County Animal Services because of "cat plague," which is a common name for feline panleukopenia. 

Upper respiratory tract infections have resulted in suspension of adoptions at the Bergen County Animal Shelter in New Jersey
